50 THINGS THAT THE INTERNET KILLED

"50 things that the Internet killed" - the article in the newspaper The Daily Telegraph was called, which hit the British audience - several hundred comments and letters to one article.
Indeed, our life with the advent of the Internet and digital technologies has apparently changed for the better: it’s more convenient to buy in online stores, it is convenient to have all the necessary information on hand, it is very important to be able to quickly transfer data and instantly learn about the news. However, not all of the changes are related to the acquisition for us, many are related to losses, which is probably why the British publication caused such a resonance. We do not notice these changes and losses until we look back 10 years

Whether we gained more or more lost, everyone has his own answer to this question. Therefore, the list of 50 lost things with us will be our own, subjective, less playful, and partly personal: in something, we completely agree with our British colleagues and borrow from their list, we will offer something of our own. So, let's begin.

In the era of the Internet, we lost:

1. The art of polite disagreement

There are a lot of materials on the network about how to politely and delicately discuss, however, an increase in discussion platforms leads to a general aggravation of the tone of dialogue. The desire to expose and expose an opponent exceeds any known norms.

2. Listening to entire discs and albums

The world of the Internet is the realm of a fragment: one video from YouTube, one song, one fragment from a movie. Starting to listen to the songs of one artist, we instantly switch to another.

3. Punctuality

Before the advent of mobile phones had to be punctual. Today the meeting can be delayed, postponed, and indeed canceled at the very last moment. Costs of the era.

4. Paper telephone directories.

Why are they, if all the contact information is posted on the site - a few clicks away?

5. Wristwatch. It is

not very convenient to get a mobile phone every time, but it combines more functions in itself - it saves electronic devices.

6. Paper letters

If you are not a member of a special club where participants write letters to each other, then when was the last time you received a paper letter from each other? In the last century?

7. Memory

Why store something in it if "everything can be found through Yandex"?

8. Next Day Sports Game Results

When was the last time you bought a newspaper to find out who won that important championship? Surely, everyone immediately watched the news on the Internet, before the match ended.

9. Remembering phone numbers

We remembered dozens, we knew several technologies for quick memorization, now - I drove into the contact list of the phone and do not need to remember anything. Until you lose your phone or demagnetize the SIM card. But which of us thinks about it? And those who think synchronize the phone and computer on time.

10. Respect for doctors and other professionals.

Having read all the articles on all sites and communities, having studied all the information about the clinic or hospital on blogs, we go to the doctor to declare his diagnosis and treatment with full responsibility. He can only agree, do we listen to his opinion?

11. Respect for historians and scientists of any

historian, we are ready to shut up for a belt, if Wikipedia is at hand.

12. Respect for priests

The authority of a priest for an experienced Internet user is also not always an authority, armed with an Orthodox search engine, one can quickly explain to any priest how much he is mistaken, mistaken, and preaches incorrectly.

13. Knowing the geography of

GPS and Internet maps completely freed us from the need to remember streets, roads, routes as long as there is electricity and they work - it's hard to get lost.

14. Privacy

Our mail is read. Although it’s a robot that decides which advertisement is better to put on our page, we’ll hardly know at what point the robot will cease to be a robot.

15. Privacy

Try turning off your mobile phone and the Internet and staying with your family for two or three days. Turning on the phone and computer back, you will see that you are already almost wanted by the police.

16. Concentration

How many minutes in a row can you work without being distracted by Vkontakte, classmates, mail, a live feed or news?

17. Reference pages in paper diaries

measures lengths and weights, time differences and city codes - probably, if we look at these pages, then only if there is absolutely nothing left to read.

18. Lunch

Normal lunch. Do not snack in a hurry at working computers while relaxing and viewing non-working sites.

19. Free evenings

It was a long time ago - to have dinner, take a walk, lay down with a book. Now we urgently need to finish one, the other, and there is no tiredness, as it were, until two at night, you feel it when you sit down to work with documents or books, the monitor or the included mail create the illusion of a second wind. Why is illusion - this is what we feel the next morning.

20. A few hours of sleep

The same ones that we spent during the day on Internet battles and reading everything indiscriminately.

21. The ability to work with a paper book

True, when you read a book, there are not enough hyperlinks, and most importantly - a search on the book?

22. Reading serious literature

To sit all day at a historical or Orthodox forum, throwing themselves at each other quotes from the net, is not the same as thoughtfully reading a serious book on relevant topics. And the illusion is created simply.

23. Feelings

In the first months of working on the Internet, every message about a sick or abandoned child occupied the mind, thoughts, feelings. And then immunity is developed and only the most caring and sincere does not skip articles about help, thinking that you will not help everyone. Previously, just the facts were enough; today, to encourage people to donate blood or raise money, all journalistic skills must be applied.

24. Help

Few still help. And infrequently. But you can soothe your conscience so easily by simply reposting the message and adding three exclamation points to it. Information support is, of course, an important thing, but if everyone is limited to reprints, who will help?

25. Responsibility

How easy it is to put off one's responsibilities for the sake of virtual problems - in the process of preparing dinner, leave to read the forum, instead of having classes with children, go to YouTube, instead of helping your wife with the housework, pretending to be terribly busy with work. On the other hand, we have no more network responsibility - he promised to help someone, and you can break the promise.

26. Patience

This letter was written long and thoughtfully, sometimes several days, then they waited for an answer for several weeks. Today, a slight wave of your fingers, and all those words that we regret in half an hour passed into cyberspace at the speed of an Internet channel.

27. Calmness The

undoubted advantage of a mobile phone is that you can always call a loved one, a child, and check. Is everything all right. For example, a child from school would be late, for example, mom goes crazy, where to look, where to run. But the problem is only partially solved - how often it happened that you dialed a number for the hundredth time to hear: "The subscriber is temporarily unavailable" "The subscriber’s device is turned off." Which is better - not to know anything at all or to hear such an automatic answer?

28. Oral transfer of experience

When we need a recipe for a festive meal or a washing machine breaks down, do we turn to the older generation for advice or type in the necessary request on the Internet?

That's all for now. In most points, undoubtedly, the pros at times, hundreds of times more than the cons. But the lost must also be remembered. 50 points did not work, but not by accident. The list is still open and new items can be added there.
